Tο
Phenomenon

1

performances,
video
Το
Phenomenon
3

αμοιβαίο σεβασμό της διαφορετικότητας;

Η
Eva
Barto
(γεν.

PHENOMENON
Το
PHENOMENON
Kerenidis
Pepe.

in
situ

Phenomenon returns!

“Phenomenon3”:
Contemporary Art

Programm, July 1 – 14 in Anafi island.

The
Association Phenomenon and the Kerenidis Pepe Collection are pleased
to announce the third edition of Phenomenon, the biennial project for
contemporary art held in the Aegean island of Anafi, Greece, which
will take place between 1-14 July 2019.
Phenomenon
3 will include a residency with a series of performances, lectures,
video screenings and other events (1-7 July) and an exhibition in
outdoor and indoor spaces throughout the island (opening 6 July,
until 14 July).
For
its third edition, Phenomenon will investigate the role of art in
times of political urgency. After decades of catastrophic economic
and social policies, an alternative, more humane future has become
unimaginable for many people. In times like this, when authoritarian
ideologies prevail, populism thrives, and the other is considered a
threat, art has an important role to play.

Deimantas Narkevičius, Into the Unknown, 2009, film still  Courtesy the artist, gb agency, Paris and Maureen Paley, London.

Art
gives us the possibility to reimagine the world, by deconstructing
the normative or the obvious, and by allowing for a proliferation of
perspectives and situated knowledges. By questioning singular points
of view, art has the potential to create non-hierarchical ways of
collective life, to enable other forms of social engagement, and to
produce spaces for dialogue and action.
Through
art, Phenomenon 3 will be looking for strategies that enable unstable
encounters of multidimensional forces that can lead to unexpected
alliances and multiple agencies. How can we circumvent systems of
violence and domination and reclaim a liveable life for
everyone
based on mutual respect of difference? Where systemic politics seem
to have failed, art offers creative ways of realising the political
potential of the affective in strategies of persistence, resistance
and subversion.
The
function of art is to do more than
tell
it like it is; it’s to imagine what’s possible.

EVA
BARTO
Eva
Barto (b. 1987, France) creates ambiguous environments that blur the
boundaries between reality and fiction. In her artistic practice, she
incorporates familiar objects, which extracted from their original
setting obtain a deceptive function that further reinforces a certain
kind of uncertainty. With a particular interest in the mechanisms of
an exhibition, Barto’s constellations aim to destabilise the
existing operative structures of the given contexts, while inserting
to the viewing experience the idea of the paradox, thus questioning
what is and what appears to be. She was nominated for the 2019 AWARE
Outstanding Merit Prize for Women Artists.

Kunsthal Aarhus, La BF15 (Lyon), Primo Piano (Paris), W139

JASON
DODGE
Jason
Dodge’s (b. 1969, USA) work consists largely of ready-mades or
specifically commissioned everyday objects, whose titles give them an
added dimension. Interested in the notion of distance and its
connection with our ability to see and locate ourselves, his works
act as gestures that prompt us to reflect upon the sense we establish
between ourselves and our surroundings. In 2012 he founded the
publishing press Fivehundred places to issue small poetry
monographs further developing his interest in language and poetry.

DAVID
HORVITZ
David
Horvitz’s (b. 1982, USA) artistic practice spans a range of
different media including installation, photography, artist books and
performances that forge public participation. Interested in the
systems of circulation, Horvitz often uses websites such as Wikipedia
and Flickr to produce his works that deal with and further address
the juxtaposition between man-made systems and natural phenomena.

Criée–Centre d’Art Contemporain (Rennes).
FLORENCE
JUNG
The
works of Florence Jung are scripted experiences that address the
concepts of individual restriction, infiltration, and visibility, as
well as anticipation. Florence Jung invents characters and situations
that seep into exhibitions where no one can unravel reality from its
staging. The performative nature of her artistic practice addresses
the ephemeral aspect of the ordinary. Narratives and myths play an
important role in the construction and remembrance of her work, which
express personal, intangible, and transitory narratives, thus
challenging any modes of documentation and dissemination.

STELIOS
KALLINIKOU
Stelios
Kallinikou’s (b. 1985, Cyprus) photographic practice develops as an
investigation in the ideological territories of national and personal
identity. With a strong interest in the act of seeing as a bodily
experience that defines the way we relate to the world that surrounds
us, his imagery reveals alternate standpoints in an effort to
question our perception and unearth the deeply rooted narratives that
are hidden within the landscape. Kallinikou is the co-founder of

JOCHEN
LEMPERT
Jochen
Lempert (b. 1958, Germany) has been working with black-and-white
photography as his primary medium. Trained as a biologist, his
ongoing interest into natural eco-systems and man-made environments
develops through an often comparative photography of animals, plants
and other natural phenomena. The juxtaposed images question our
systems of knowledge and present themselves as a challenge to the
anthropocentric assumptions of perception.

DEIMANTAS
NARKEVICIUS
Deimantas
Narkevičius (b. 1964, Lithuania), originally trained as a sculptor,
has mainly been working with film and video. In his artistic practice
Narkevičius examines the relationship of personal memories to
political histories, particularly those of his native Lithuania.
Employing documentary footage, voice-overs, interviews, re-enactments
and found photographs, his films submit historical events to the
narrative structures of storytelling and cinema. For the artist,
history itself has become both material and methodology.

VITTORIO
SANTORO
Developing
a work that is both conceptual and referential, Vittorio Santoro’s
(b. 1962, Switzerland) artistic practice takes the form of sound
installations, sculptures or drawings. Articulated around repetition
and literary forms, his body of work questions as much the
inscription of the work in space and in time as the ontological
inscription of the individual within the social space.

ABOUT
PHENOMENON
Phenomenon
is a biennial project for contemporary art held in the Aegean island
of Anafi, Greece, that includes a residency with performances,
lectures, video screenings and other events, as well as an exhibition
throughout the island. It is organized by the Association Phenomenon
and the Collection Kerenidis Pepe.
According
to Apollonius Rhodius’ “Argonautica”, the island was named
Anafi because Apollo made it appear to the Argonauts as a shelter in
a dark night, using his bow to shed light (A
is derived from
“appeared”, the same root as phenomenon).
THE
RESIDENCY
During
the residency, the artists conceive and produce in situ works that
become part of the exhibition. In addition, the artists and the other
invitees animate a series of lectures, round tables, projections,
walks, or other activities related to the project’s concept.
THE
EXHIBITION
The
exhibition is hosted in the school, a two-storey neo-classical style
building in Chora and in other outdoors places. It works as an open
forum for the artists to propose and produce works in relation to the
island and the concept of the project.
THE
PUBLICATION
The
documentation of the residency events and the exhibition become the
starting point for the creation of a publication, at once catalogue
and artistic object, which extends the project’s existence and
connects it to the following edition.
